What is chain link fabric?
Link fabric (also commonly referred to as wire or mesh) is made by weaving a series of spirals together in a diamond pattern and is available in a variety of sizes and gauges. The most common is the 2" pattern (for pool fencing, a diamond size smaller than 2" is required) with #9 gauge wire. The 2" pattern refers to the mesh size, which is the distance between two parallel lines in the fabric.
What is the size of the wire?
The individual helices woven together to form the fabric consist of steel wires, the gauge being the diameter of the wires. The higher the gauge number, the smaller (fineer) the wire diameter. The most common sizes are 6 (.192"), 9 (.148"), 11 (.120"), and 11-1/2 (.113"). Size 9 is the most common wire size in residential and commercial applications. Sizes 11 and 11-1/2 are typically used for temporary fencing, while size 6 is used for high security applications.
What does "selvage" refer to?
How the top and bottom of the link fabric (where the braided strands bend together) is done is called the selvage. Common selvage types are "Knuckle" and "Barbed" (or twist). The knuckles are rounder and therefore safer, with no sharp tips that can get caught by clothing or people. Barbed or twisted with sharp ends, often used in high security applications.
