Gabion walls are most commonly used as retaining walls or as tall vertical walls in industrial settings such as bridges, embankments and sea walls. 

Gabion walls are often stepped or sloped to better retain the soil behind them.
Today, you'll still see gabion walls in coastal or riverine areas to control erosion and even divert the flow of water bodies.
